Empty Nest Remodeling – Remodeling After Kids Move Out

Empty Nest Remodeling – Remodeling After Kids Move Out

by Vincent Carneglia / Tuesday, 13 October 2015 / Published in Home Renovation, Philadelphia, Remodeling, Retirement, Trends

Congratulations! You’ve launched your kids into the world, and now they’re clearing out of the home and getting their own places. The only question is, what will you do with all the extra space?

While some empty-nesters opt to keep bedrooms the same for when kids visit, others have been waiting for years to do something creative with the house. If that’s you (or you in a few years), here are some creative ideas for empty nest remodeling, with plenty of possibilities for reclaiming newly vacant rooms.

Empty Nest Remodeling Office

1. Create a Cozy Home Office.

Time to get the computer out of the family room and create a comfortable place to work at home. A popular move when empty nest remodeling is transforming a bedroom into a home office. Picture a big desk, bookcases, cabinetry for storing paperwork, and other features for maximum productivity. You’ll feel great getting work done in a space designed just for burning the midnight oil.

2. Store More with a Smart Design.

Here’s a great idea for a small bedroom: Make the compact storage space you’ve always needed. Especially in homes with damp basements or unusable attics, a little extra storage can be a godsend. To create a space that’s resistant to moths, roaches, and silverfish, make the room a cedar closet by lining the walls with cedar plank or panel liners. It not only smells great, but protects your stuff from all of these annoyances.

 3. Make a Master Suite for Guests.

Another empty nest remodeling favorite is turning the biggest bedroom into a guest room your friends and family will love. If grandchildren visit often, built-in bunk-style beds might be the best fit. Otherwise, a full bed with a sitting area makes the room perfect for extended stays, while a fold-out couch is the best for saving space and allowing for multiple functions.

4. Give Yourself a Place to Play.

More and more, empty nest remodeling involves clearing out bedroom furniture and putting in a round table and club chairs, shelving, cabinets, and wooden floors. The result: the perfect room for playing games with the company you suddenly have time to invite over.

Not much of a game person? Bring in art supplies for your creative time, build a home theater, or do something truly unique that you’ll enjoy for years to come. (Scrapbooking room, anyone?)
