The cold weather’s here, the snowstorms have started, and we’re all spending most of our time indoors these days. Is it any wonder winter makes many homeowners wish they had more space?
One of the most obvious ways to create more space in your home is to finish your basement. Instead of a cold, damp, unusable space, you’ll have a fresh new floor you can use however you want: as a gym, entertainment space, office, storage area, or what have you.
If you’re thinking about finishing your basement, we’ve got a few ideas and photos you can use for inspiration. These are some of the most popular ideas for basement finishing in 2016!
1.) The Man Cave – Pool Table with Bar
Okay, this doesn’t have to be a “man cave,” specifically. But it’s easy to picture the guys coming over to shoot pool and watch the game in a space like this. Hardwood flooring keeps it classy, while an at-home bar provides some relaxation. If you have the space and the budget, finish it up with a home theater with surround-sound speakers. You’ll never need to go out again.
2.) The Playroom – Carpeting and Open Space
You don’t need much to create the perfect playroom for your kids. Soft carpeting and fresh paint are the mainstays, but you can follow up with unique features like in the photo above. (See how the natural architecture allows for a fun playhouse?) Once your playroom is complete, you can keep the chaos contained with greater ease…maybe.
3.) The Luxury Spot – Classy Dining Area with Accent Wall
On the other hand, you can always forget about the kids and create a luxury space just for you. Try making use of natural stone to create a beautiful accent wall, then fill out the space with earthy tones for your paint and flooring. An antique overhead lighting fixture and wooden furnishings create a swanky spot to wine and dine.
4.) Organization Zone – Smart Storage and Extra Space
Basement finishing can always fulfill the functional goal of creating more storage and flex space. This remodel transforms the basement into a big, open area for all kinds of activities, while plenty of shelving lets you store all your stuff. Smart, simple, and multifunctional!
My husband and I have lived in our current home for almost 3 years now and I think it’s time to finally finish the basement. We have 2 kids and often have our nieces and nephews over to play. I liked your ideas for turning the basement into a playroom and an organization zone. I think that incorporating both of these ideas might be the best option for us!
