Bathroom Remodeling Mistakes – Three Common Slip-Ups

Bathroom Remodeling Mistakes – Three Common Slip-Ups

by Vincent Carneglia / Tuesday, 11 August 2015 / Published in Bathroom Remodeling, Home Improvement, Home Renovation, Philadelphia, Remodeling

Bathroom remodeling may be the most common form of home remodeling these days. It makes sense to us! In schedules crammed with work, kids’ activities, household chores, and whatever else you have going on, who wouldn’t want a beautiful stone shower or soaking tub for relaxing at the end of the day?

But before you go planning your bathroom remodel, make sure you’re in the know on the most common mistakes people make when undertaking this project. As your Philadelphia bathroom remodeling specialists, the Very Cool Guys will break it down for you:

Mistake #1: Failure to Understand the Water System

We all want our bathroom to be a work of art, but you have to remember that this room is first and foremost a functional space. Your shower, bath, and toilet have to work properly with your water system, otherwise all you have is a pretty room that doesn’t work right.

Before digging into a bathroom remodel, you should ensure you have expert guidance in terms of where things must be placed and what products are compatible with your water system. Whether you have a gravity-fed system or a combination boiler and pressured system will have a huge impact on what you can buy.

Mistake #2: Failure to Choose the Right Tile

The focal point of many bathroom remodels is a gorgeous splash of tile lining the shower, walls, or floor. But if you work with tile a lot (as we do), you know that it looks extremely different when it’s actually in place, as opposed to when you’re holding it in your hand. This is because many tiles are installed with thinner or thicker grout lines than anticipated, or just look different in the context of the rest of the bathroom’s design.

Your tile work is going to have a huge effect on the final product, so talk to someone who specializes in this kind of work before you attempt it yourself.

Mistake #3: Using Up the Budget Too Fast

Typical remodeling story: The DIY remodeler didn’t realize how pricey the project was going to be, failing to anticipate unexpected setbacks and extra costs, and burned through the budget before the finishing touches could be applied. Sure, they managed to get the marble walk-in shower installed, but the rest of the bathroom sits unchanged.

It’s important to save money in the budget for those finishing touches: lighting, window seals, blinds, shutters, door handles, and often a coat of paint. These things are important, and often mean the difference between a bathroom remodel that looks homemade and one that’s sleek, polished, and stylish.
