Laundry Room Remodeling – Ironing Out a Plan

It may not be as glamorous as your kitchen or master bedroom suite, but your laundry room deserves some attention, too! This is especially true for all of you big families out there, whose laundry rooms take a beating week after week.

If you’re looking to tackle a laundry room remodeling project, we’ve got a list of tips and ideas for ironing out a plan:

Find Your Site.

If you’re repurposing a space to become your laundry room, you’ll want to scope out your location wisely. Heat and moisture abound in a laundry room, so your ideal locale has plenty of ventilation and natural light to keep mildew at bay. A ground floor room with direct access to the outdoors is best.

Can’t swing these requirements in your home’s current setup? Consider installing an extractor fan and slathering the walls with mold-resistant paint.

Choose Your Tasks

What chores are you looking to complete in your laundry room (other than laundry)? Believe it or not, this is actually something you want to consider before starting your laundry room remodeling project. Some homeowners choose to view their laundry room as more of a general utility space, where they can store hot water tanks, second freezers, pet supplies, outdoor gear, and more. Think about the kind of functionality your home needs, then talk to your contractor to see if these ideas can be worked into the plan.

Pick Appliances Wisely

It saves water and energy to do one large load of laundry instead of several smaller ones, so if you’re one of those big families we talked about earlier, you’re probably better off going big! Once again, your laundry room remodeling project is your chance to include some appliances you may not have had space for before. A hanging rack (ceiling- or wall-mounted), a double sink, mixer taps, and draining boards are just a few possibilities. Rely on your contractor to place appliances in the appropriate spots based on power sources and aesthetic appeal.

Store Your Stuff

To maximize floor space, make use of kitchen-style cabinets for storing your various laundry supplies. Mops, brooms, and vacuum cleaners will require tall, deep cupboards, while your detergents and other cleaning agents call for shallow cupboards. If there are kids and pets about, these should be lockable so that you can safely store bleach and other toxic products.

Flooring and More

Ceramic and vinyl are both good choices for a laundry room remodeling project, since both are easy to clean, durable, and waterproof. A skillful contractor will ensure that the flooring is slightly sloped to drain into a waste hole, just in case.
