Last week, we posted about kitchen remodeling on a budget, so we thought we’d continue the kitchen theme with another list of helpful tips. This week, we’re going to break down some of the most popular varieties of countertops and explain the pros and cons of each.
All of the guys at V.C.G. Construction hope this list makes big decisions a little easier during your next kitchen remodeling project!
Marble
– Pros: Marble is a luxury material, beautiful to behold and available in a variety of glossy colors and distinctive veining. It’s the material of choice for baking enthusiasts, since its tendency to stay cool keeps the dough from getting too soft.
– Cons: Marble countertops can stain, scratch, and chip if not cared for properly.
Granite
– Pros: Every granite countertop is unique, the natural colors and patterns preserved to gorgeous effect. It’s also a champion material for durability, standing up to nicks, heat, and splashes.
– Cons: Ideally, granite countertops should be sealed every few years to prevent stains. Because it’s a very heavy material, you’ll also need to ensure that cabinets are sturdy enough to bear the weight of granite countertops.
Tile
– Pros: If you choose tile for your kitchen remodeling project, you probably did so for the incredible aesthetics. With an endless selection of colors and patterns, you can achieve just about any look you’re envisioning. In addition, tile is resistant to heat, stains, and scratches — and a chipped tile can be easily replaced without upending the whole countertop.
– Cons: Tile is a bit of an uneven surface, which can be problematic for some. If grout is left unsealed, it can also stain.
Butcher Block
– Pros: This is another countertop material known for its warm, pleasant aesthetics, perfect for kitchens styled in the country or cottage fashion. The natural appearance of butcher block makes way for scratches and nicks, which simply become part of its charm.
– Cons: Butcher block must be disinfected frequently. It can also swell and contract with exposure to moisture.
Stainless Steel
– Pros: Durability, durability, durability! No material stands up to stainless steel, which resists heat, bacteria, nicks, scratches, stains, and pretty much anything else you can throw at it. Plus, it’s ideal for kitchen remodels aiming for a super contemporary look.
– Cons: As far as countertops go his is one of the more expensive materials. It also tends to show fingerprints, and can be a bit loud when dishware clangs against it.
